ホンダの創業者、本田宗一郎氏はある日、あっさりと代表の座を降りた。
その後、彼は全国行脚の旅に出る。
全国のホンダの営業所、工場を訪れ社員一人一人に挨拶し、握手を交わしたいと言い出したのだ。
それが社長を辞める際の彼の唯一の願いだった。
飛行機、車、新幹線を乗り継いで彼は全国どころか外国も含め、1年半ですべてを回りきった。
ある工場で宗一郎氏と握手する前に急いで走り去ろうとするものがいた。
「どうした？」
そう呼び止めると
「手が汚れているから」
と油で真っ黒になった手を隠しながらもぞもぞしている。
だが宗一郎は、
「いいんだよ、それでいいんだ」
と彼の真っ黒な手を握り締めた。
「働いている手じゃないか、立派な手だ。俺はこういう手が一番好きだ」
そういいながら涙ぐむ宗一郎氏と一緒に社員も涙を流した。
